Grief and mental illness distort reality by generating tunnel vision that robs us context and perspective. To keep my eyes and ears and heart in the world outside my brain, I voraciously consume books and write, write, write.
Writing helps untangle thoughts. I jot questions to myself and my son; I rearrange arguments; I vent; and I craft connections to disparate experiences. I compose one line, a list of bullets, or page upon page—it all helps.
To read is to step into other people’s stories, which can create a path out of heavy feelings. I use an e-reader, underline and dogear paperbacks, and create my very own story time experience for myself by listening to audio books when I walk, garden, and needlepoint. Fiction, nonfiction, podcasts, digital magazines—each play an important role in helping me stay upright and present.
Here I share favorite books, quotes from wise authors and public figures, and occasional musings about life within and outside of grief.
